Two identical figures, one
being an inversion of the
other: the shaft on the left
appears to be higher than the
one on the right although both
are at equal heights on the
screen.
Although other factors are
probably at work in the M├╝ller-
Lyer illusion, I believe that
incorrect comparison plays the
major role. There is evidence to
support this view. The
illustration at left contains two
identical figures; one is an
inversion of the other. Both are
hybrids of the M├╝ller-Lyer
figure. Although the tops and
bottoms of the two shafts are
aligned horizontally, the shaft
on the left appears to be higher.
This effect is based on the
observerΓÇÖs inability to separate
the shaftΓÇÖs location from the
end parts of the figure. Stanley
Coren and Joan Girgus have
shown that any steps taken to
isolate the shaft from its
arrowheads, such as using
different colors or verbally
instructing the viewer, reduce
the illusion.
